Mime Workshop with Richard Knight (B.Ed.)

Introduction to the basics of illusionary Mime Technique:

This workshop sets out to teach the fundamental basics of mime principles. Techniques taught will include: The wall, manipulating objects, walking in the wind, the mime walk, the moon walk, robotics, fixed points, fixed objects, pushing and pulling, toc, resonance and the French pantomime; Pierrot.


Who should do this course?

This workshop is designed for beginners to professionals, and anyone who has very little to no knowledge of mime at all. It's a starter course in illusionary mime, open to all ages from 16 years upwards. The course starts off very simple and mores slowly to a more in depth understanding of the mechanics of physical expression. It's ideal for performers, actors or anyone who has always wanted to learn about mime for themselves or to enhance their own body confidence.


Who is the teacher?

Richard Knight (B.Ed)

trained in mime and movement with the late French master Jacques Lecoq and Philippe Gaulier, and graduated from LAMDA in 1995.


He has performed and taught mime for over 30 years both in the UK an all over the world. His current theatre company, 'Mime The Gap', performs comedy mime shows in theatres and festivals.


Richard’s has worked with the, The National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal College of Music, The Royal College of Art, The Royal Festival Hall and both Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

His screen credits include BBC 1 Sit Com 'Not Going Out', Mime Consult for James May’s ‘Man Lab’ and personal tutor on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, Tim Burton's film 'Sweeney Todd' as 'Slow Motion Expert', working with Andy Serkis for Motion Capture for ‘The Avengers; Age of Ultron’ and was the personal mime assistant for Carey Mulligan in the film ‘Suffragette’.


He has recently published his book ‘Mime The Gap: Techniques in Mime and Movement’. You can purchase a copy at the workshop and Richard will sign it for you.

Mime basics for preparation includes: Tension - Release - Reverse - Curves.


Principles of Pushing & Pulling Objects - The Rope - The Punt - The Wall.


Understanding the aspect of Resistance - Different Qualities of objects.


Knowledge of Mime Principles - Fixed Points - Fixed Space - Suspension - Robotics.


Basics of Body Language – Focusing on posture and gesture.


Qualities of Substance - Earth - Air - Water - Fire.


Mime Walks - Slow Motion - Running - Walking on the Spot - Moon Walks.


Pantomime Blanche: - How to perform more than one character as a solo performer.


Dynamic Movement: How to make moments epic and or poetic.


Apply Skills in Performance: Using Music with Mime - both as a solo performer and in group work.
